Everything Ages Fast, vintage poster style

I've always been fascinated with the art and design of the 1950's. Check out these vintage ads for Facebook, Twitter and others. These were done by Moma Propoganda for a campaign entitled "Everything Ages Fast."

Who uses location-based apps?

Here's a funny view of who uses Twitter and location-based marketing, that I mostly agree with:

Let's dwell on that for a moment: Urban hipsters (and de facto tech early adopters) want the world to care where they are at any given moment, and marketers are being told that it matters. But consider the average daily life of an average American, which might not involve prideful trips to the new "it" bar or hot party or recently opened boutique. I'm thinking it's more like: back and forth to work, one weekly trip to Walmart, a couple trips to the Shop-Rite, a stop at Walgreens to pick up a tube of antifungal cream, a back-and-forth to the mall multiplex on Friday night, a back-and-forth to the kids' soccer practice Saturday morning, etc.

The full article is pretty interesting though, check it out here.

TrendyMinds on Twitter

Here's an interesting excerpt from the Indianapolis Star a few weeks ago interviewing Elizabeth Friedland from the ad firm Trendy Minds about importance of social media trends:

Biz Buzz
Tuning into social media

Account exec says online pursuits can bring payoff

By Daniel Lee
daniel.lee@indystar.com

Elizabeth Friedland, account executive with Indianapolis ad and PR firm TrendyMinds, is into social media: She Tweets, blogs and Facebooks (Is that a verb?).

Friedland took time from her online pursuits to stop by the Biz Buzz studio Wednesday to chat with Star business writer Daniel Lee about social media and its role in work and personal life.

Below are edited excerpts from the conversation:

Question: Have you seen any payoff from using Twitter? Any new deals for Trendy Minds (@trendy minds)?

Answer: With Twitter there are certainly some people out there talking just for the sake of talking.

As far as Trendy Minds is concerned, we've had three clients recently who we've connected with, or who have followed us on social media, and have approached us to do an RFP or to consult with them. So, there is business to be had.

Q: You Tweet both socially and professionally. How do you balance that?

A: Social media is all about authenticity. People want you to be real and authentic. I want my clients and friends or people who are in between to get a consistent picture of myself. I don't have a separate account for professional and personal use; I kind of integrate it all in there.

Q: What are your biggest do's and don'ts on Twitter?

A: No. 1 is to be authentic. It's important, also, to realize your audience. There are some people on Twitter who seem to have a very business-minded focus, and then there will be a Tweet that seems out of place where they talk about something extremely personal. So it's important to know your audience.

Twitter Tag

Ok, so I’m an advertising guy, and, I’m just still not convinced that Twitter is as amazing as everyone says. Sorry, I just don’t get it. So, in hopes of turning to the dark side, I’ve devised a little experiment.

This will be a game of Twitter Tag.
The idea is to see how the connections through followers works and can explode among cyberspace and the Twittersphere itself.

Here’s how it’ll go down:
I will begin by sending this message to just one person.
Tag, you’re it! Join the experiment: http://insidethetoybox.blogspot.com/2009/06/twitter-tag.html
The message will hopefully be read by that person, as well as show up on his feed, then each of his friends will see it and do the same. Everyone who sees it only needs to send it to just one other person. Important note: they must also click the link, because that’s how I will be tracking its effectiveness, through the amount of hits this particular post gets. Not only that, but if it actually does work, then naturally everyone’s statuses will have the message and be tagged.

Good luck, and Tag, you’re it!

**Edit** I JUST found out this was already done, damn. Whatever, this is a learning experience for me. So, please help out anyway. I still think it’s a good idea. (Ach, and only a month ago too! http://tweetcrunch.com/2009/01/05/the-twitter-tag-project/)

Tweet for Jesus?

Oh boy! So now the Vatican is tech savvy and down w/ the social media. That's right, Cardinal Sean Brady wants us to Tweet prayers for our loved ones. "Make someone the gift of a prayer through text, Twitter or e-mail every day. Such a sea of prayer is sure to strengthen our sense of solidarity with one another."

Read more in the AdAge article here.
The article also talks about the end of youtube, twitter, and facebook.

It's coming...What is this Zooloo?

It's coming...I have no idea what it is, but it's coming...It's something called Zooloo. As for exactly what it is or what it does, I haven't the slightest idea. But, it's coming.

So you're an ad man (or your not), and it's important to stay up on new digital offerings. Is this a new social network like Facebook, or is it a blog? (There is a blog section). Maybe it's the next Twitter, or something completely unrelated. Regardless, I know you. You want to be on the cutting edge of the digital landscape, walking into work and touting off your new find. You're so hip and trendy.

So here's what you do, you go online to Zooloo.com, and put in your email address. When more information arrives, you'll be the very first to know. Apparently there's even a facebook group you can join, to give you hints on the big secret. So that's it, you are then the first to tell all your buddies at work about how you were the first to hear about Zooloo. Congrats you cool cool person you.

Twintern!?!?

Earlier this morning I received an email about a potential internship opportunity through Pizza Hut. While I already have one lined up, I figured I'd open it to see what it was about.

Job title: Summer Twintern
Job title, translated: A summer intern who uses Twitter
Salary: Competitive (with other Twitterers)

What is this? Even on the job title in the posting, it read "Twintern." Not only does this sound hokey and unprofessional, they had to translate the job title. And a competitive salary with other Twitterers? Isn't that free social media?

Anyone who knows me knows don't like Twitter (I don't care if you took a poop at 5:42). Hey, Alex Bogusky doesn't like it either. I can however see how many different opportunities it can be used for with marketing purposes, such as promoting a blog. Pizza Hut's over all reasoning was really solid, learning from the Domino's disaster, and doing something to protect themselves.

"The Twintern must also play social-media defense, monitoring Twitter for any mentions of the brand and alerting superiors whenever anything negative about the Hut is being said. (Applicants should study last week's YouTube gross-out video posted by Domino's employees, which was quickly passed around Twitter, to understand why.)"

Ace job Pizza Hut.

However, I must disagree with this: The successful applicant will speak fluent OMG and LOL and correctly use the terms DM (direct message), RT (retweet) and # (hashtag).

OMG LOL ROFLMAO...Do I get the job?
